When Emotions Get Stuck in the Body

Emotions don’t just live in your head, they live in your body too. You may not know it, but the body keeps the score. You may think your way logically through your issues, but your body will outsmart you and keep things in your cells, in your joints, in your fascia.

When they get stuck, you might feel heavy, restless, or unable to move forward.

The truth is, your body already knows how to release. But we got so used to using our intellectual brain, we forgot how to lean into the body to process.

With some simple practices, you can create space for emotions to move through instead of sitting stagnant. This isn’t about getting rid of emotions. It’s about transforming and integrating them—allowing what’s there to be felt, processed, and carried in a way that feels lighter and more natural.

Dance your heart out! Not because its a protocol, or a plan, because it feels good!

Here are seven simple ways to support that flow

1. Move your body
Shake, dance, stomp, stretch, twist, whatever feels natural. Let your body release stuck energy. Even slow practices like Yin Yoga can help shift what feels frozen.

2. Sing your heart out
Hum, sing, or even scream into a pillow. Using your voice is one of the most direct ways to free emotions held in the body. The vibrations when you hum directly stimulate your vagus tone and put you in a calm state. Imagine, you almost get into a car accident and your heart starts to race. Try humming or singing, this will help you come back to a grounded state instead of staying in fight or flight.

3. Get good sleep
When you are sleep deprived (under 6 hours), can’t fall asleep or wake up multiple times, waste accumulates in your brain & glymphatic system. What does this look like? Foggy memory, poor decisions and irritability. When you have a consistent restorative sleep, you clear out waste and reset your system. Protect it. Prioritize it. Your emotional balance depends on it. If you feel stuck here, reach out to me for a Free Discovery Call so we can get your sleep back on track.

4. Immerse yourself in water
We come into this world in water. The womb is our safe space. Its what makes us feel nurtured. Take a warm bath, swim in a lake, dip in the ocean, or even a cold shower can help. The water wakes up your system and clears stagnant energy. Kill two birds with one stone — scream under water, no one will hear you and it’ll feel so good!

5. Name it
Pause and notice what’s really there. Is it anger, grief, frustration, or fear. Naming your emotions gives them shape and makes them easier to move through.

6. Ground safely
Find what stabilizes you: your breath, the earth under your feet, or the presence of someone you trust. When you feel safe, emotions can flow naturally.

7. Breathe

I find breathing in for 4 holding for 4 and exhaling for 6 is so helpful. I particularly like doing a 10 or 15 minute breathwork in the morning or when I feel overwhelmed. It really lets me release, I end up crying, and then feeling calm and clearheaded.

What Happens When You Let Go

When emotions move, you move. You’ll notice it in your body, your energy, even your decision-making. Life feels less stuck, more fluid. And with that flow, balance becomes possible.

You’ll notice you feel less anxious, less angry, more resilient to stress, and less reactive. That guy who cut you off, won’t make you flinch. That delayed order? Won’t bother you. Because you are releasing. When emotions are released they are transmuted and allow you to feel like you can breathe. Your throat clears, your mind stills, and you feel more peaceful.
